Top 5 Decorating Mistakes

Welcome, Fellow Decorators! Whether you are a DIY or PRO Decorator, understanding core design foundations is the foundation of a fabulous space. Let's talk about common decorating mistakes. As an experienced interior designer and stylist, I've seen these mistakes time and time again, and I'm here to help you steer clear of them. So let's dive in!

Mistake #1: Not Planning Ahead
Even if you or your client is doing their job in stages due to budget constraints or life, having a plan will still ensure you make smart decisions. Often people rush into a project without a clear vision or plan in mind, which can lead to costly mistakes and a lot of frustration. My advice? Take the time to think about what you want to achieve with your decor, create a mood board, and make a detailed plan before you start. This will help you to purchase the right size, shape, and color of decor and furniture.

Mistake #2: Ignoring the Importance of Scale
Another common mistake I see DIY decorators make is ignoring the importance of scale. They choose furniture or decor items that are either too big or too small for the space, which can throw off the entire balance of the room. Make sure to measure your space and choose pieces that fit the scale of the room. Keep simple rules of scale and proportion in mind by following the rule of 2/3.

Mistake #3: Clashing Colors and Patterns
Mixing and matching colors and patterns can be a fun way to add personality to your decor, but it can also go wrong if not done correctly. The key is to find a balance between bold and neutral, and to make sure the colors and patterns complement each other. Find the commonality by using colors that complete, not compete. Mix geometrics with patterns that have movement, then throw in a mini-print to bring it on home. We dive deeper into pattern mixing in the DIY Academy.

Mistake #4: Not Enough Lighting
Lighting is a crucial aspect of interior design that is often overlooked. Poor lighting can make a room feel dark and uninviting, while good lighting can make a space feel warm and cozy. Layer lighting and mix multiple sources, from overhead to task, and ambient lighting. Today's lighting options are even better due to the options that don't even require a plugin.

Mistake #5: Overcrowding and Clutter
Finally, one of the most common mistakes I see DIY decorators make is overcrowding and cluttering their spaces. Even if you are a Maximalist, know when to stop. (side note to any professional reading this...don't force your aesthetic on your client. If the client is the opposite of your minamalist or maximalist approach, remember they live there...not you) Clutter is chaos, not design. Know when to edit and simplify. Choose a few statement pieces and let them shine, rather than filling every inch of the room with stuff.

Assess your space to see if your room would benefit by fixing any of these mistakes. Help your room be the best it can be!
