THE BEGINNING

A love for decorating that grew into more!

I began as a residential designer and quickly discovered that there were two types of clients. Those who loved the process, wanted to take their time, and build slowly. But the majority of my clients wanted someone who could see how to showcase the best of what they had, get results quickly, without months of waiting or spending a fortune.

This led to a new service and I became known as the Original One Day Decorator. I saw firsthand it wasn't just about the "stuff" but how you used color, arrangement, furniture, and decor to transform a space. It also meant that a room doesn't have to take weeks to come together.

That insight led to my signature One Day Decorating System, which became the cornerstone of my design business and the approach I've refined over decades of real client work. It also became the first course in what today is called The Decorating and Staging Academy. (The-DSA.com)

Teaching others what I had spent years learning!

The birth of HGTV led to a shift. Plus, I embraced technology and had one of the earliest design driven websites, and was a frequent guest (or guide as they were called then) on AOL. Requests started pouring in from people who didn't just want a beautiful room—they wanted to learn how to create one themselves.

For years, I had offered workshops and seminars to DIY Decorators. These course were finessed and went from DIY to PRO level. The launch of my then signature course, One Day Decorating, was the beginning of what is now The Decorating and Staging Academy. Although the talented Sandra Racz took over The-DSA in 2014, I continue to work side by side with her, teaching and developing courses.

Our courses expanded into interior decorating, staging, and our amazing Confident Color System. In later years, we saw the need for a complete marketing and staging courses, as well as niche programs.

I've now had the privilege of training thousands of decorators and stagers across the country, sharing practical, real-world strategies that go far beyond theory. Many have gone on to build flourishing businesses of their own.

THE REALIZATION

It takes more than talent!

Early on, I noticed a pattern. My students could create gorgeous rooms—that part came naturally. But turning that talent into a business? That was a different challenge entirely. Week-long trainings would end, and students would go home and do nothing with what they'd learned.

That's when I understood: it takes more than talent. I set out to not only be able to teach them how to decorate but to turn that talent into a profitable service. I took every marketing and business program I could find and earned my Guerilla Marketing Certification. I loved this approach to marketing as it wasn't about text book marketing but creative and thought provoking ways to building a following, while being budget concious.
